Article by Sue Noriega

Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? Well, consider this. Breakfast not only “breaks the fast”, it is also an important contributor of nutrients and helps control weight .

Sugary pastries and cereals may jump-start your energy level in the morning, but can cause your body to produce too much insulin. In an hour or two, your blood sugar can drop leading to hunger, headaches and fatigue. On the other hand, whole grain breads and cereals, protein, fruits and vegetables are more slowly absorbed by the body maintaining a more steady energy level throughout the morning.

The Bogalusa Heart Study conducted in a large biracial community in Louisiana since 1972, found that breakfast is an important contributor to the nutritional adequacy of children’s diets. Children who skipped breakfast (16% of 10-year olds) had a lower intake of calories, protein, carbohydrates and several vitamins and minerals compared to children who ate breakfast. Breakfast skippers ate fewer dairy products and fruit, and were more likely not to meet even two-thirds of their needs for several vitamins and minerals. The study also compared the breakfast patterns of 3 groups of 10-year olds who ate 1) breakfast at home, 2) breakfast at school, or 3) no breakfast. Children who ate breakfast at home ate fewer calories, a lower percentage of calories from fat and more carbohydrates than children who ate breakfast at school. However, the home breakfast contained more sucrose than the typical school breakfast. The sucrose came from table sugar, colas and other sweetened drinks, cookies, cakes and brownies. In other words, breakfast eaten at home can be good or bad depending on the choices. The school breakfast contained slightly more calories, carbohydrates, fat and sodium compared to the home breakfast. However, both the school breakfast and home breakfast eaters received more nutrients for the day than those who ate no breakfast.

A number of studies from the National Weight Control Registry show that people who are breakfast eaters successfully maintain a significant weight loss . Eating breakfast increases metabolism. By not eating until later in the day, the body assumes it is fasting. Fasting causes the body to conserve energy (calories), slowing metabolism. People who do not eat breakfast tend to make up for the calories later in the day leading to overeating.

If you don’t care for typical breakfast foods or find yourself short on time in the morning, try these ideas:

Spread a thin layer of a nut butter on whole wheat toast. This is my breakfast when I have to eat in the car – a peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat toast.

Top a whole grain small bagel or half a large bagel with light or fat-free cream cheese.

Make a breakfast yogurt with plain nonfat or low-fat yogurt with fresh fruit and a cereal such as Grapenuts or granola.

Serve low-fat cottage cheese with fruit.

Scramble an egg, egg substitute or egg whites and roll up in a whole wheat tortilla. Serve with salsa.

Top oatmeal with a small scoop of low fat, low sugar ice cream or frozen yogurt. Sprinkle with wheat germ.

Top a whole grain cereal with fresh fruit and milk or calcium-fortified soy milk.

Muffins are great to grab and go, but healthier if homemade with whole wheat flour and/or oat bran. They can be frozen and thawed in the microwave in 30 seconds or less.

Good Morning Recipes

Wake-Up Shake1 small banana, frozen (freeze in peel & let sit at room temperature about 10 minutes for easier peeling), ¾ cup skim milk, ½ cup nonfat sugar-free flavored yogurt, ¼ cup orange juice. Blend all ingredients until smooth. Makes 2 cups (2 servings). 120 calories, 1 gram fat, 5 grams protein and 20 grams carbohydrate per serving.

Carrot-Zucchini Muffins1 cup all-purpose flour1 cup whole wheat flour½ cup sugar1 teaspoon baking powder1 teaspoon ground cinnamon½ teaspoon baking soda1 large egg, lightly beaten¾ cup orange juice¼ cup butter or margarine, melted2 medium carrots, shredded1 medium zucchini, shreddedCombine first 6 ingredients in a large bowl; make a well in center of mixture. Stir together egg, orange juice, and butter; add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened. Fold in carrot and zucchini. Spoon into greased muffin pans, filling two-thirds full. Bake at 400˚ for 20 minutes. Remove from pan immediately, and cool on wire racks. Makes 1 dozen. About 140 calories each.

In today’s world of 2 minute instant cup of noodles, there are lots of speculations about how to adopt the healthy eating methods to achieve those healthy families. A healthy eating plan is helpful to a great extent as it includes major calculations about the nutrients and ingredients that a human body needs. One of the most important points of healthy living is never to skip breakfasts as they are the most significant part of a day’s meals and they are able to keep you going for the entire day. Another big problem people cant seem to remember is not to eat so many big meals. Instead, meals should be broken down into several smaller meals per day so that the body is able to absorb the food more efficiently. Many healthy families have reported that as a part of healthy lifestyles, they follow a regular time table for their meals and by having meals at the right time daily, they are able to keep themselves in perfect shapes.
When we talk about healthy food and healthy eating habits, the very first thing that comes to our mind includes fruits and vegetables. No doubt but they should be a mandatory part of a person’s diet without which, a proper nutritious diet is not possible at all. While looking for healthy eating foods, you should ensure that they are natural and organic as far as possible. You should try to avoid artificial and canned foods as far as possible and also make sure that you consume some cereals also for your breakfast.
Brad Cook: Flat Roof Materials Pt 2 by Brad Cook

Brad Cook explains that modified bitumen can easily be installed by those who have some experience in home improvements and have already carried out a number of home improvement jobs successfully. Brad Cook goes on to explain that it used to be that you needed to use a torch to burn this material onto your roof but this has changed with the introduction of adhesive options. You can also have it in light colors which can help reflect sunlight off your roof and prevent you from having to use the air-conditioning too much in the summer.

Another option is to use a rubber membrane which you use to coat your roof. Brad Cook notes that it is a very successful flat roofing material as it is highly durable and resistant to wear and tear. If you do develop a leak then they aren’t very difficult to locate or fix but unfortunately the cost is a lot more. If you choose a black rubber membrane you will find that heat is absorbed form the sun which isn’t that great in summer. Brad Cook informs that if you want to pay extra, however, you can buy one which is lighter in color.

We have a lead flat roof and unfortunately have had a problem or two. Brad Cook highlights that if it is installed by someone who actually knows what they are doing and puts some thought and consideration into it then they aren’t too bad. Unfortunately the person who did a section of roof for us didn’t take away the old layer of lead underneath. Brad Cook found that the result was that the lead didn’t sit flat and allowed water to get underneath. We had to get someone else up to take it all off, replace rotten wood and then lay the lead sheeting down correctly. Brad Cook adds that anyone who installs a lead flat roof also needs to be very gentle with it because it’s actually quite soft, especially when you are working with heavy tools.

Briggs Cook MD: General Information on Asian Eyelid Surgery by Briggs Cook MD

Asian Blepharoplasty

Briggs Cook MD explains that upper eyelid lift procedures continue to be the most commonly sought after cosmetic procedure in patients of Asian heredity. Over time complex desires have developed for enhancement and change of racial traits. Briggs Cook MD goes on to explain that just a few decades ago, most Asians would seek Westernization eyelid surgery. Today, many people seek to maintain a heritage maintaining look. But to approach every Asian patient with a “this is what we do today; this is the standard” approach is narrow-minded. Briggs Cook MD notes that such simplistic thinking represents a poor understanding of the complexity of goals and desires that motivate a person of Asian legacy to consider an upper eyelid procedure. Any Asian patient has the same goals as Caucasians when seeking general cosmetic eyelid surgery: to feel more confident about one’s appearance. Briggs Cook MD believes that it is then the eyelid expert’s task to investigate and truly understand what represents the best fit for this person’s aspiration. Partly due to today’s connected world where distances are easily traveled and borders crossed with a mouse click, the aesthetic goals of Asians in America and overseas are surprisingly not very similar.

“Normal” Asian Eyelids and Desire for Change

There is not just one kind of eyelid appearance that makes it “Asian”. In fact, Briggs Cook MD recalls that approximately half of all Asians have an upper lid crease. Although the “average” Asian lid crease is certainly shorter and shallower than the common Caucasian crease, this is not absolute. There are Caucasians with eyelid configurations almost identical with some people of Asian descent. Briggs Cook MD points out that these variations demonstrate already how complex the questions of an ethnic eyelid or “the Asian lid” are. In people with a truly absent lid crease (a.k.a. single eyelid), only slight anatomical differences are responsible. A normal tissue adhesion between the lid skin and the lid-lifting muscle is notably absent. Instead, small amounts of eyelid fat protrude downwards into the lid leading to a fuller eyelid appearance. Most Asians with a single eyelid who explore eyelid surgery want a crease. Briggs Cook MD explains that it is then up to the doctor to explore with patience where this crease should be positioned to achieve the look that the person desires. Tiny differences of 1 or 2 mm can make a big difference in the appearance after a cosmetic eyelid surgery. Some eyelid fat is almost always removed during an Asian blepharoplasty. If small amounts of fat removal are combined with a relatively short lid (four or five millimeters or so), a more conservative change is expected maintaining the Asian appearance. Briggs Cook MD recognizes that if more fat is taken, the eye socket deepens. When a deeper socket and a high lid crease are combined, a more Caucasian look will be the outcome. And then there is the gray zone between these two extremes which is where many patients like to see their eyelids. Most people are actually looking for such a “double-lid” that is normally found within their Asian peers providing therefore the natural look.

People who have already a double lid may want this feature to be enhanced. Briggs Cook MD sheds light on the fact that this can be achieved by a procedure that is somewhat similar to most Caucasian eyelid lifts where skin is removed and fat is sculpted. Such a procedure is relatively common in aging Asian patients; sometimes performed years or decades after initial double-eyelid surgery. Others may want the existing lid crease raised.

The outline of most Asian eyes is that of an attractive slant where the outer corner is higher than the inner corner. Briggs Cook MD goes on to note that this pleasant almond shape usually is not altered with blepharoplasty. In fact, it is a pretty silhouette that many Caucasians seek.

Brad Cook: Flat Roof Materials by Brad Cook

Brad Cook recognizes that the roof isn’t something that we spend a lot of time thinking about however we should all take care of it probably a bit more than we do already. People generally tend not to like spending a lot of time or money on their roof as they feel that there are other places that they could concentrate their efforts in that are going to be a lot more noticeable to their neighbors.

Brad Cook finds that for some reason when people see their roof leaking, they simply put a bucket under the drip and hope that it doesn’t get any worse. Perhaps the reason they act like this is because roofers can cost a lot of money and often they don’t even repair what the problem was. Brad Cook explains that as much as you would probably want to just run away and not deal with these issues, maintaining your roof on a regular basis to ensure that it doesn’t get to the point of no return is very important. Brad Cook knows that sometimes dealing with smaller problems can prevent bigger problems occurring at all. This is the best way to ensure that your roof lasts a long time.

Brad Cook goes on to explain that many homes have flat roofs despite the fact that they often are nowhere near as practical as other types of roofs. The biggest problem with flat roofs is the fact that water cannot drain away and so it end up collecting on the surface. Brad Cook adds that, also, if it snows, the snow will not be able to fall off the roof and so adds a considerable amount of weight onto your roof causing extra strain.

If you have a flat roof which has any gaps or holes then water can very easily drip through into your home. Brad Cook finds that this is why you should have your flat roof really water-tight as possible as this will prevent any damage from occurring due to dampness. The more modern flat roofing materials are better at preventing this sort of problem from happening but as you might expect, they do cost more. Brad Cook recalls that when it comes to choosing a flat roof material, you have four main options.

Brad Cook notes that if you go for the built up flat roof then what happens is that several layers of tar and other materials which are resistant to water and put down and then gravel is placed on top. This is one of the older methods of flat roofing but it’s been vastly improved by waterproofing materials. Brad Cook goes on to note that this makes the roof much more strong and durable than before. You might be wondering what the purpose of the gravel is. Well, the gravel acts as a fire-resistant barrier. This method is normally the cheapest option for a flat roof however the major downside is that is can be very heavy. This means that you might have to strengthen your joists and is often considered to be unsuitable for homes because of its unpleasant odor. Brad Cook informs that another problem is that the gravel can then clog your guttering.

Indian cooking…mere words are not sufficient to express or rather draw out the diversity and the ethnicity rendered by all Indian regional cuisines to get our Indian cooking well acknowledged in the global arena. And I consider myself absolutely privileged to be relishing on this wonderful Indian cooking menu daily…cooking, experimenting and innovating on our old traditional Indian recipes and finally concocting something, hopefully palatable…not only for me but for my family as a whole…. Primarily influenced by our old conventional traditions, religion, socio-eco-cultural aspects and availability of resources, Indian cuisine has scores of tantalizing delicacies to offer…in fact to each Indian household to suit all individual palates. Such is the greatness of our Indian cuisine and thx to all those wonderful people who have used their imagination and creativity to provide us with a variety of lip-smacking Indian
recipes for us to devour.

And here I’d like to take you all for a petite rollercoaster ride to the amazing world of Indian cuisine, with a peep into the exotic Indian dishes, in general…. A diffident yet candid attempt from my part to introduce to you the vast range of delicacies Indian cuisine offers and its’ various perspectives…. A virtual look into the mass variety of Indian cooking, both North Indian and South Indian cuisine, from a hard-core foodie but an extremely simple and average cook (yes, an honest confession indeed)…. A mild attempt to parse the various tastes and aromatic cuisine styles of our country that evidently is subject to change with respect to region, culture and customs…. To be precise, this is infact a truly modest attempt to recreate the magic of “Unity in diversity” in the backdrop of Indian cuisine.

As known, our Indian cooking has loads of recipes to offer for every single dish. And since I’d only be sketching out the dishes and a few personal favourite recipes thereof, I might not be able to provide you with the exact recipe you’d be looking for. In such an instance, if you indeed would want me to share recipes with you that have not been described, do let me know and I shall only be happy to post it consequently (and of course, they’d be authentic or at least I’d try to make them so) and share our thoughts on the same.

And at this juncture, I’d really like to thank pachakam.com and the crew behind it for having given me an opening to share my recipe experiments and experiences from my small kitchen to the world at large. And at this point, I’d also like to mention that it’s really saddening to see me as the only blogger blogging away in this massive recipe site. I’d really appreciate if more and more readers and recipe authors would come forward, pen their thoughts on their secret and
favourite recipes, and give me company, as there’s nothing worse than utter solitude in this world. It really hurts!!! After all, recipes are for sharing; sharing not only food and tastes…but love and thoughts…love not only to food but also to humanity as well…. So, what better place to start sharing your love than a complete cookery site…. And of course, not before giving another full kudos to our own Indian cooking as well.

So, on that note, welcome to the world of Indian cooking and mouthwatering naadan delicacies!!!!
